Dieng Plateau is a plateau formed by volcanic crater that has died. The shape of the crater clearly visible from the plains located in the center surrounded by hills. Before becoming the plain, this area is a large lake that is now living traces of the lake. Traces of the crater at the moment, still occasionally reveals volcanic activity, such as the crater Sikidang. It also volcanic activity, which is a gas / geothermal steam and fed through a pipe with a diameter large enough, and installed in the ground to go to certain locations that are sufficiently far away from human habitation and used for Geothermal Power Plants.

With topography, beautiful scenery and sites of ancient relics in the form of temples, so the Dieng plateau has potential as a place of recreation and heritage objects as well as an interesting history. Administratively plateau Dieng (Dieng Plateau) with a height of approximately 2088 m DPL with an average temperature of 13-17 C, is located in the district Banjarnegara and Wonosobo regency, Central Java Province.

Dieng temple is a temple complex that is the religion of Shiva, is situated on flat land Dieng (Dihyang), with a height of about 2000 meters above sea level, measuring 1800 meters long and 800 meters wide. To the north lies the mountain Prahu and from the direction of this mountain river flowing Write to the south, into the Dieng plateau and forming a lake formerly known as the Bale Kambang. So that water is not too full there is a channel called a pipe Ashwatthama channel. According to reports, the water pipe is partly found near the temple Arjuna.

Dieng temples and several other temples in Java, Dieng is the oldest after Gedong Songo temple in Ungaran, Wukir Temple Mount, and so founded on the slopes of a mountain / hill. If it was established in the lowlands, the land lifted up page, for example can be seen in the Prambanan temple. Prambanan temple has three pages, first page is a central page, then the second page and third page. Surface soil page I (center) is higher than ground level page II and III.

Laying on the slopes of the mountain shrine, on top of a hill and at the edge of a river or lake has been discussed in the book Vastusastra, the guidebook for artists (silpin) to create a building site (vastu). According Vastusastra, to make the place of the gods should be in the mountains, with water flowing. But when seen from the point of symbolic meaning, the mountain is a microcosm, an imitation of Mahameru abode of the gods, Shiva and the family lived at the top of the mountain Kailasa in the Mahameru.
